And lately, those watching have been treated to record breaking feats, including the second no-hitter in a playoff game in MLB history. The Philadelphia Phillies and their fans have a true gem of a baseball player on their hands, and if another World Series championship is in the offing, you can be sure Halladay will be a major reason why.
Tim Lincecum is just what the San Francisco Giants needed in the wake of the Barry Bonds era – someone likeable to lead the team. In contrast to the bald, muscle-bound and surly Bonds, Lincecum is a shaggy-haired, tall and lanky, small-town kid, who comes off genuine and humble. The two-time Cy Young-winner made his post-season debut by pitching a shut out against the Atlanta Braves this month. That’s more good news for Bay Area baseball fans.
The 2010 MLB post-season has been a story of dominant pitchers. There have been some great hitters doing their thing, but by and large, the men on the mound have dominated the spotlight. The Texas Rangers are no exception. The starting pitching duo of Cliff Lee and CJ Wilson came up with whopping performances to give the Rangers an early lead in their American League Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Ohio State Buckeyes picture themselves in the hunt for a BCS national championship, but the Big Ten squad will have to be perfect in 2010 to get a crack at the NCAA’s biggest prize. With one of college football’s most prolific passing games and a quarterback in Terrelle Pryor who brings a multitude of weapons to the field, OSU may just have what it takes. But hungry Boise State and Oregon teams out west are champing at the bit for a spot, where they will most likely battle the Alabama Crimson Tide at season’s end.
Eugene, Oregon hasn’t always been a hub of football greatness, but the University of Oregon Ducks have never stopped taking their program seriously. The ‘90s had their ups and downs for the PAC-10 squad, with the early part of the decade proving difficult. Fast forward to 2010, and the Ducks are one of college football’s most powerful teams thanks to key characters like head coach Chip Kelly and running back LaMichael James.
It hasn't often been the case in recent history that the University of Arkansas Razorbacks were a force to be reckoned with in college football, but 2010 represents another step forward in the new era of Hogs football. Head coach Bobby Petrino is a big part of the program’s ascension in the NCAA ranks, but having a star quarterback like Ryan Mallett hasn’t hurt either.
Louisiana State University has been one of the nation’s most prominent football programs of the past decade. Part of the reason for the LSU Tigers’ most recent success is head coach Les Miles, who also had a successful stint at Oklahoma State in the NCAA before leaving to join the Dallas Cowboys NFL coaching staff.
Unfortunately, the talk in the NCAA college football world this off-season has nothing to do with the product on the field or the prospects of the upcoming season’s top schools. Instead, all eyes and ears are attuned to USC in the wake of the scandal involving Reggie Bush. After being hit with a stiff punishment and overhauling much of their staff, the Trojans are attempting to erase the Bush era from their history.
It’s been a long hard climb, but this could be the year Boise State plays for a national championship. It’s hard to believe a team in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) has clawed its way to legitimacy, but the Broncos are the real deal. With head coach Chris Petersen calling the shots and Heisman candidate in Kellen Moore at quarterback, 2010 might prove to be one of the biggest football seasons ever in the state of Idaho.
It was another day of last second nail-biters in the NCAA tournament. Is there any doubt that March Madness is the best sporting event of the year?
The injury-stricken Purdue Boilermakers made good on their #4 seed in spite of the team’s health problems. Purdue knocked off #5 seed Texas A&M 63-61 in overtime.
