Just Label It Study Assures No Rise In Prices From GMO Labeling

As pro-GMO labeling legislation reaches the desks of politicians in Washington, the ever clever biotech industry continues to prove it will do anything to sway voters not to adopt the new laws.

Most biotech firms fear a dip in sales if their product is labeled GMO. In California, where a labeling initiative was defeated last November, anti-labeling lobbyists alleged that labeling laws would only hurt the consumer by driving up the price of food. Why? Partly because labels on food products will need to be replaced.

Scott Faber, Executive Director of Just Label It and former Vice President of the Grocery Manufacturers Association, disagrees. His anti-GMO campaign released a new study this week revealing the impotency of label changes to affect food prices historically.

"Adding the words 'may contain genetically engineered ingredients' to the back of the package will not add to the cost of making food,” Faber said.

Kai Robertson, a food marketing expert and the study's author, echoed Faber's sentiments.

 “There are no studies that document the impact of changes to a product’s label on prices charged by supermarkets,” Robertson said in response to her research.

"Food processors regularly make changes to the labels of their products – as part of ongoing product innovation to anticipate and meet changing consumer demands and for other marketing and regulatory reasons,” she added.
