Food growers in New York are receiving a little extra money to research the best way to provide the state with food.
New York's Governor, Andrew M. Cuomo, announced a new funding initiative this week courtesy of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. 11 research teams will receive nearly $900,000 in funding to explore potential improvements to New York's agricultural output and the reach of their agricultural sector.
One of these recipients will be Cornell University, whose Plant Pathology and Plant Microbe Biology Department was given a grant for $47,260. Their project will focus on ways to enhance potato seed production for New York State farmers through the use of hydroponic systems. Lays Chips, one of the largest potato chip manufacturers in the US, already buys the majority of its seed potatoes from hydroponic producers.
“This funding will allow some of New York’s top researchers to identify new ways to improve areas like crop production and resiliency," said the Governor. “Investing in research and development is crucial to growing our state’s agricultural sector and economy.”
