Indoor gardening is more work than most non-growers think. The truth is that indoor horticulture is demanding of your time, stressful, and may require tough decisions that will have a dramatic impact on the final yield and quality.

The pressures of running an indoor grow room can deeply infringe on a person’s lifestyle. In order to keep their heads straight and their gardens thriving, growers of high-value crops implement a variety of automation techniques to lessen the workload of an indoor garden.

By automating various aspects of their grow rooms, indoor gardeners can spend less time worrying about basic parameters; this relieves stress and adds efficiency to the garden’s overall performance.

Atmospheric Automation

The most common automation controllers found throughout indoor gardens are atmospheric controllers. These controllers range from basic thermostats connected to devices that control temperature to more complex machinery designed to perform a number of functions including photoperiod timing, CO2 regulation, and temperature and humidity control.

Beginners looking to automate their grow rooms can begin with a thermostat/humidistat controller. This controller lets the user plug multiple devices (fans, A/C unit, dehumidifier, etc.) into a single controller where the user sets the parameters. These controllers can eliminate a number of problems and help to optimize plant growth by creating a uniform environment.

A combination of atmospheric automation and nutrient reservoir automation create a growing environment that can be fine-tuned to optimize production.

More advanced growers looking to supplement CO2 may combine multiple atmospheric controllers or purchase a complete controller (sometimes referred to as a “brain”) capable of performing light timing, temperature, humidity, and CO2 control.

Atmospheric automation is very important for growers who increase the CO2 levels in their rooms. Automation controllers designed for CO2 enrichment will automatically turn off or reduce exhaust fans while the CO2 device is active in order to reduce wasted CO2.

CO2 controllers are also equipped with a photocell to turn the unit off during the garden’s dark cycle. Because the optimal running temperature for an indoor grow room slightly increases with enhanced CO2 levels, it is important that the grower is able to dial-in the room to a precise temperature.

Growers with fully automated atmospheres reap larger yields and accelerated growth due to the plant’s ability to capitalize on uniform environmental conditions.

Nutrient Reservoir Automation

Growers of high-value crops who already have full atmospheric automation but want to relieve even more of their workload are turning toward nutrient reservoir automation.

To create a completely automated nutrient reservoir system that requires only minimal maintenance, a gardener should use a water chiller/heater, nutrient autodoser, pH auto adjuster, and an auto shut-off valve connected to the water source. Temperature, nutrient concentration, and the pH of the nutrient solution could all be automatically kept within the parameters set by the grower.

A combination of atmospheric automation and nutrient reservoir automation create a growing environment that can be fine-tuned to optimize production. Fully automated grow rooms also offer better testing facilities for new plant varieties, fertilizers or other plant growth products since a fair amount of variables are already under control.

These automated rooms also offer much deserved peace of mind to the grower and can relieve a number of stresses otherwise endured. A fully automated grow room doesn’t mean that the plants will grow themselves, but they do offer a reduced time commitment from the grower and an increased efficiency that maximizes the grow room’s return.
