These days, grow room automation is making it much easier for growers to have a life outside the grow room, and one company is quickly advancing that notion: Robomatic.
Founded in 2010 by Stony Brook University grad student Edward Kim and Harvard University grad student Michael Ceyko, Robomatic’s flagship product is the Etherdose Duo.
We caught up with Kim to learn more about what puts his products ahead of the curve.
“My biggest pain as a hydroponic grower is worrying about the EC and pH,” explains Edward. “Robomatic lengthens the tether you have to your grow, allowing you to leave your grow for a couple of weeks at a time.”
“We don’t make just a vanilla EC/pH meter, pen/probe or continuous meter,” he continues. “We wanted to make something different, so we added an embedded web server that allows you to monitor and control the EC/pH meter and make automatic adjustments using connected peristaltic pumps or solenoid valves. And you can do this remotely using a PC, iPhone or other web-enabled device.”
Like so much technology these days, the real advantage Robomatic offers is in the interface, one that’s easy to operate in these touchscreen times.
“Although there are similar products out there, I wanted to make something extremely low-cost and with an easy-to-use web interface,” Edward explains. “You can control it easily, not dealing with buttons and LCDs, but a clean web interface that everyone can enjoy using. And we provide a flexible package that can accommodate grows of many sizes, including if you just need the minimum.”
Talking with a hydroponics scientist and entrepreneur like Edward makes us feel certain that, in the future, remote automated grow systems will look more and more like Robomatic.
