We’ve talked about aeroponics before, and it always generates a lot of interest because you rightly see aeroponics as a way to get maximum yield in your hydroponics urban garden.

Rosebud readers contacted us to ask some interesting questions about the various types of hydroponics urban garden systems that avoid or limit the use of solid root zone media such as rockwool, soil, coco coir, etc.

One of these systems is called the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT). Your plants are held in nets or gaskets above a flat-bottomed gutter through which a film of nutrients water circulates via pump.

In most cases, the roots hang in the gutter and there’s no root zone media at all. In other cases, growers choose to put a small amount of rockwool or other media to give the roots something extra to hold onto. Either way, NFT delivers a constant flow of water, nutrients and oxygen- as long as the pump operates properly and you have uninterrupted electricity service.

Other growers use what’s called “deep water aeroponics.” These are systems in which your plants roots hang in a tube in which misters spray nutrients on the roots. What makes this a “deep water” system is that the bottom of the tube or other grow chamber has a thin layer of nutrients water in it. In a pure hydroponics system, there is no thin layer of water. All your roots get are the mist.

The rationale behind a hydroponics deep water system has to do with what happens in a pure aeroponics system if your electricity interrupts, your misters fail, or your pump fails. In those situations, your hydroponics plants can quickly die from lack of water.

If you have a layer of hydroponics nutrients water at the bottom of the root chamber as you do with deep water aeroponics, your plants have a buffer of water and nutrients to see them through the troubles. The only downside is that having standing water in a hydroponics garden root chamber may cause problems with precise control of pathogens, ppm and pH. Also note that some deep water aeroponics growers use rockwool cubes or other solid media to give their roots extra protection against water shortages or other drought.

In a true, pure aeroponics system, high-quality misters take nutrients water from a central reservoir and distribute it to roots on a periodic basis. The very act of misting provides lots more oxygen to roots than your roots would get if they’re growing in rockwool, coco coir, hydroton and other solid root zone media systems.

And because your plants don’t need to work as hard to get nutrients and water, pure aeroponics gives them extra energy they devote to aboveground growth and of course to flower production.

There are two hugely important things to watch out for with any type of hydroponics urban garden NFT or aeroponics system. One of them is the quality of your water. We recommend RO water only. Misters get clogged easily by particulates found in almost all water sources.


Hydroponics urban gardeners always pay attention to the latest techniques, such as aeroponics in their urban garden.

The second warning is to ensure you’re only using the highest-quality professional nutrients. There’s no root zone media to hold nutrients, buffer them or distribute them. If your nutrients are defective, your plants won’t get the essential elements they need.

Likewise, if your nutrients are inferior, poorly-manufactured and incorrectly designed, they clog your emitters, which interrupts or limits water and nutrient misting and harms or kills your plants.

In these systems, you’re best advised to use synthetic hydroponics nutrients with multiple chelates and precise ratios of essential hydroponics elements. Anything less and you’ll get clogged misters, poor plant nutrition and a loss of maximum yield in your hydroponics urban garden.
