Hydroponics Grow Room & Hydroponics Gardening Planning

Hydroponics grow room planning isn’t quite this complicated Hydroponics grow room planning isn’t quite this complicated

When it comes to hydroponics grow room and hydroponics gardening planning, you get a good feeling when you do it right. Many hydroponics growers have learned the hard way. I recall an embarrassing grow room situation in which my lack of planning made things harder if not impossible. I started several strains of seeds at the same time, even though each strain had radically different growing characteristics. I should have known better, but I underestimated the differences.

If you starve them for light when they’re babies they’ll pump all their efforts into building their stems. You get stemmy plants that are unstable and often will fall over.

What happened? Each strain popped its seeds and grew at different rates so I had a diverse range of heights on my young hydroponics plants that meant I couldn’t set my lighting at optimum height for all the plants.

When you have that kind of situation, you may get stretchy plants because some of them are too far from the lights. If you starve them for light when they’re babies, they’ll pump all their efforts into building their stems. You get stemmy plants that are unstable and often will fall over.

If you absolutely cannot part with those hydroponics starts because they’re coming from expensive seeds or some other reason, put a gentle fan breeze on them and tie them with plant ties to tiny stakes or even toothpicks, but not too tightly. Your hope is that they’ll thicken up their stems enough to stand up straight on their own.

Another hydroponics grow room planning problem happened when I waited too long to procure a fresh bale of Pro-Mix HP. I had started the seedlings in Jiffy Preforma and transplanted them into 4 inch pots filled with the remainder of the Pro-Mix I had on hand. By the time I realized they were getting rootbound and needed to be transplanted, I remembered I had run out of Pro-Mix.

I went to the local hydroponics store. They were out of Pro-Mix. I drove 35 miles to another hydroponics store. They were out of Pro-Mix. Then I started to look for it online. The shipping cost for a bale of Pro-Mix was more than the cost of the Pro-Mix!

I gritted my teeth and ordered the Pro-Mix only to wait a week before the online hydroponics store shipped it - to the wrong address. The address they shipped it to was one of my neighbors, the one who is weird, nosy and unfriendly. He came over to my house and asked me why I had shipped a bale of professional potting mix to his house. I mumbled apologies. What a nightmare.

The same thing can happen when you’re setting up or retrofitting a hydroponics grow room. For example, my friend bought a Chameleon hydroponics plasma light and found that it was too heavy for his hydroponics lighting supports. He had already sold his HID units and only had a couple of T-5 high-output hydroponics lights in reserve. So his plants were growing under T-5 lighting when they should have had the hydroponics plasma light. He hadn’t planned ahead by buying the lumber and other materials necessary to strengthen his lighting supports. He lost a week of optimum growth.

When you’re a professional hydroponics grower on a production schedule with people counting on your hydroponics crops, a week of slow growth is a big disappointment.

We’ll talk more about hydroponics grow room and hydroponics gardening planning in the future. It’s common sense, but not just common sense. And a lot of it involves your relationship with your hydroponics retailer.
