Using Compost Tea- Not Sewage Sludge- for Organics in Hydroponics Featured

Don’t pollute your hydroponics plants! Don’t pollute your hydroponics plants!

As a hydroponics grower, you may have heard of compost tea as a way to bring an organic approach into your hydroponics indoor grow room. You may also have heard of adding compost itself to a hydroponics soil mix. Compost can be a super-potent blend of organic nutrients that are easily available to your hydroponics plants. But it has to be made from the right materials in the right way, or it can be useless or even harmful for your crops.

Unless you make it yourself or make sure to buy a high-quality product, you may be getting sewage sludge disguised as compost.

The same goes for compost tea. You can make it yourself using organic compost as the base material. You also need an aquarium pump, aerator, gang valve, aquarium tubing, and some unsulphured molasses.

What benefit does compost and compost tea give you? Mainly you get living microbes that assist roots, protect plants and increase nutrients uptake. Your hydroponics plants also get a healthy dose of nutrition from the compost or tea itself.

But compost has become controversial. Unless you make it yourself or make sure to buy a high-quality product, you may be getting sewage sludge disguised as compost. And- you guessed it- this fraud is being perpetrated by large corporations and the government.

For example, the Kellogg Corporation (you know, the one that also sells all that sugary breakfast junk food for kids) is selling a product called “Amend.” Who would have thought that this cereal corporation was also selling gardening products?

But it is selling gardening products, a vast array of them, and some even certified by the Organic Materials Research Institute (OMRI), which makes me wonder if OMRI is legit, or bought off.

At least OMRI hasn’t put its stamp of approval on Amend. How could they? Amend contains sewage sludge. That’s right…use Amend, and enjoy knowing that what people dumped from their bowels into their toilets has now been marketed to you.

But it’s all just poop, right? Why object to using human poop, when many hydroponics growers (especially outdoor growers) have used bat poop or bird poop (guano)?

Well it’s because human poop is NOT packed with nutrition good for hydroponics plants, and sewage sludge (no matter how well processed), can be packed with harmful pollutants, including radioactive pollution.

Corporations buying crappy sludge from government waste treatment facilities and selling it to us as organic or natural fertilizers should be no surprise. Corporations have long used us, our atmosphere, our lakes, rivers and oceans…as waste dumps.

It’s a business practice. Generate toxic waste, but instead of disposing of it properly (which would cost money), just dump it into the air, land or water.

Of course there’s a little problem with that- the bad stuff travels through the food chain and harms humans and other life. It can kill lakes, rivers, soil and oceans. It can hurt your hydroponics plants too.

But who cares? As long as corporate profits are up and shareholders are happy, the corporations are glad to dump crap on us. And in the case of products like Kellogg’s Amend, they are happy for us to pay them for crap. Especially since nowhere on the product label do they admit that Amend contains sewage sludge!

Corporations buying crappy sludge from government waste treatment facilities and selling it to us as organic or natural fertilizers should be no surprise.

The same goes for “reclaimed water.” Cities and counties say it’s a water-saving measure, kind of like recycling. It’s actually a way to dump sewage water.

Government folks will tell you: “It’s like free fertilizer for your lawn.” Actually it’s free pollution for your lawn, and it also harms natural systems, especially lakes, rivers and oceans. Reclaimed water is bad for your hydroponics plants.

I suggest that if you want to use compost you either make your own, or you get compost tea made for hydroponics by professionals. Using professional hydroponics compost tea gives you the power of organics and beneficial microbes that’ll boost the taste, aroma, yield size and potency of your hydroponics crops!
