Hydro 101 with Deonna Marie: Why are pH Levels Important in Indoor Growing?

Advanced Nutrients has solved the pH problem forever. Advanced Nutrients has solved the pH problem forever.

Why is pH important? Do you really need to worry about it as much as they say you should? Confusion over pH is an issue that I think often needs to be explained in greater depth. Some growers insist on the importance of having the exactly perfect pH levels, while others don't pay too much attention because they don’t understand the great importance of it.

Depending on where you’re getting you’re info, you might be among those confused growers out there not getting every thing they can out of their grow because they’ve neglected their pH levels.

Let’s do a little breakdown of the importance of maintain precise pH, and why it's better for your grow.

pH is often one of the most overlooked facets of indoor growing. The fact is that when pH is not at the right level, plants lack the ability to absorb and contain some of the essential nutrients they need for healthy growth.

For all plants there is a particular pH level that will produce optimum results, so it is imperative to measure the right pH for your hydroponic system and for the strain of plant you are growing. If you’re not sure of the correct pH for the strain you’re growing, just Google it.

Measuring and checking pH is quite simple. There are a variety of approaches, including a new advance in grower technology that is both effective and easy. But let’s start by taking a look at some more traditional methods first.

The most inexpensive way (but not necessarily the best) is to use paper test strips.

These paper strips are made up of a pH sensitive dye that changes color when dipped into your nutrient solution. You then compare the paper strip to a color chart to determine the pH level of the solution being checked. This method is more for the grower on a budget, and is not always completely accurate.

A liquid pH test kit is a popular method to measure pH, and may suit hobbyists who are just starting with hydroponic gardening. The kits come with pH sensitive dye, which, when added to the nutrient solution of your hydroponic system, will change color. You can determine the right pH by comparing it to the chart provided in the kit, the same as using the aforementioned paper test strips.

The most highly efficient way to check pH is to use a digital meter. These meters come in various shapes and sizes, the most popular type being the digital pen. These pens are very small and compact and easy to use. You simply dip the end of the pen (the electrode) into your reservoir with your nutrient solutions for a few moments. The pH number is displayed on an LCD screen. You must remember to also clean your PH meter regularly for the most accurate reads.

Remember, as your plants take up nutrients from the reservoir, the pH level of your nutrient solution will go up. Thus, keep checking pH time to time and adjust the right level to avoid any damage to your plants. This is a must, and I'm running into more and more beginner growers that are overlooking this whole process. No bueno!!

However, with all the above ways of managing pH covered, there’s another way to keep your pH in check. That way is to use Advanced Nutrients’ pH Perfect line of nutrients, which balance pH for you. No measuring of extra devices needed. You can read more about pH Perfect products and the science behind them here.

And check out the video at the end of this article for a demonstration of pH Perfect technology.

So next time you go to add nutes to your watering container or Resi, ask yourself if you've been properly adjusting your PH. Until or next 101, be sure to grow big or go home!!
