Growers Gather Globally: Gardening and Hydroponic Trade Shows

Tradeshows are a great way to get stoked on new hydroponics products. Tradeshows are a great way to get stoked on new hydroponics products.

With the growth of home gardening and hydroponics worldwide, trade shows have been increasing in popularity. We picked a few grow expos that we feel best represent the range of grow show options. It’s never too early to start planning your trip.

Spring Home and Garden Show
Anaheim, CA – May (Annually)

As a home and garden show, this one is dedicated to interior decorating as much as serious cultivation. But who says that home and garden must be separate entities nowadays?

Horticultural artists are using techniques found in hydroponic systems to integrate plants into the homes of green-minded people, either on the facade of the house or inside, when space allows. Home and garden shows can be found throughout the country, so if you can’t make it out to Anaheim, don’t worry—there will be a home and garden show near you soon.

Independent Garden Center Show (IGC)
Navy Pier, Chicago, IL — August (Annually)

This especially large annual grow expo has become a Chicago institution, and is the largest exposition held at the city’s Navy Pier convention center. With over 210,000 square feet of exhibitions and more than 600 booths, this is a massive event, with press and visitors descending on Chicago from around the world.

There is also music all day, with a mixture of live bands and DJs. Past performers include Charlie Daniels, Foreigner, America, Kansas and Styx; this year’s headliner is .38 Special. IGC knows how to entertain both the eyes and ears of its attendees.
Keep in mind that this expo is for owners and employees from within the garden industry. This can be as simple as working for a store that has a small garden department. So while tickets are free, it is an industry-only event.

International Garden Show
Hamburg, Germany — April 26-October 13, 2013

An exercise in endurance, this show runs for four and a half months, beginning around the start of the spring planting season and ending just in time for the fall harvest.

The International Garden Show truly focuses on growing, showcasing the newest and greatest technologies, but also the long-used, slowly developed techniques that have served growers well for decades.
This year’s theme, Around the World in 80 Gardens, is a celebration of the gardening and agricultural traditions of the entire planet. The show’s organizers are endeavoring to showcase the climates, techniques and traditions of the world’s farmers, from extreme locations only suitable for hydroponic gardening to the fertile soils of the North American farm belt and large parts of Europe.

Northwest Flower and Garden Show
Seattle, WA – February 5-9, 2014

Held at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, the Northwest Flower and Garden Show has been a popular horticultural get-together since 1989, and has only grown since then. The main purpose of this particular show is to celebrate and explore the living artwork of some of the world’s most renowned show gardeners in the world.

In addition to the large full-garden displays, the show features a small-space showcase, which features the best ways to integrate plants into apartment or condo living. Awards are given to the most creative gardens, which utilize everything from traditional soil to every hydroponic technique in the book. If you are someone who really loves plants and how beautiful they can be when grown and tended by a person with talent, this show is an excellent experience.

HydroponEast Expo
Moscow, Russia – May 10-11, 2013

This year marked the very first event hosted by HydroponEast Magazine, a gardening and hydroponics magazine made specifically for local growers in Russia. They hope to host this show for many years to come, and with vendors like Advanced Nutrients, Method Seven and Trimpro among many other participants, they are off to a good start in terms of legitimacy within the industry.
