Hot Stuff: Great Fall Entertainment

Elvis Costello and the Roots teamed up for a stellar album. Elvis Costello and the Roots teamed up for a stellar album.

Hey growers, there’s been some cool stuff coming out this fall. Here’s our pick for great movies, TV, and music. What have you been digging?

Nine Inch Nails: Hesitation Marks

After a four-year hiatus, Trent Reznor returns with the project that made him a superstar. Hesitation Marks is Nine Inch Nails’ eighth studio album, aiming to blast more dark, edgy tunes into the consciousness of the listening public. Reznor assembled some top-flight collaborators to elevate the new record, including his Academy Award co-winner Atticus Ross, super-producer Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters), prog rock legend Adrian Belew (King Crimson), and Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac). In an era where big records increasingly lack integrity, this release is a breath of fresh air.

The Roots and Elvis Costello: Wise Up Ghost

It’s an unlikely team-up, but hip-hop greats and late-night television fixtures the Roots have joined forces with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Elvis Costello to produce a full-length album of original material. It’s tough to predict what the tracks will sound like, whether they’ll find a balance of rap influence and Costello’s signature new wave attack. But one thing’s for sure — with this crew of next-level creators, the result is bound to be wonderful.

Prisoners

Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal star in this crime thriller about child abduction. Gyllenhaal is the detective and Jackman is the tormented parent, but the twist comes when Jackman kidnaps the man believed responsible for the abduction. This one looks intense and at least a little disturbing, with moral ambiguity taking center stage. Buckle up for a true nail-biter.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Marvel Studios has dominated the big screen with hits Iron Man, Captain America, and The Avengers. Now the comic publisher cum film studio has set its sights on screens of another kind — network television. Avengers mastermind and TV guru Joss Whedon co-created the series, as well as wrote, produced, and directed the pilot. That means there’s a strong chance that this ABC series will pull of the dual feat of drawing big ratings from the viewing public at large while simultaneously meeting the high demands of comic book nerds.
