As of Thursday, July 14, if you try to visit the account named “ladygagaofficial,” all you’ll get is a message that the account has been suspended. Apparently, Lady Gaga crossed someone here, but ultimately, the fact remains that Lady Gaga videos are available all over youtube.com and the rest of the internet, including at Lady Gaga’s other channel, her official Vevo channel on YouTube.

Gaga is no stranger to controversy. She’s all about raising eyebrows, and all her antics have made her one of the most-loved and most talked about celebrities in the pop world. And in a musical climate where fewer and fewer stars get to occupy the top spots, Lady Gaga’s long reign shows that she is a talented self-promoter with a keen sense of what the marketplace is looking for.

Another recent stunt, where Gaga took the stage in a wheelchair, drew fire from activists and advocates for the handicapped. But again, it’s hard to imagine that any such incident will diminish the star’s popularity. Instead, controversy just gets more and more people talking about and interested in her.

So what’s the substance beneath all the style? Is the glitz, glamour, and garish distraction just a ruse to disguise a lack of talent? Not at all. And that’s the kicker. Gaga is not only a compelling singer of songs, she’s a songwriter with a knack for a killer hook. Her songs are the type of bubblegum flavored guilty pleasures that are going to be playing on the radio for years, even decades, to come.

People tend to dismiss popstars as flash-in-the-pan poseurs lacking real substance, but you can still turn the dial on your radio and stumble upon Madonna or Cyndi Lauper. Lady Gaga is just the current incarnation of the controversial and/or weird pop songstress. C’mon. Admit it. After you hear “Poker Face,” “Paparazzi,” or “Born This Way,” whether you mean for it to happen or not, those melodies are stuck in your head. And you kinda like it.
