“Man Down”
Rihanna is no stranger to controversy, and this tale of murderous revenge was a piece of work that stirred the pot big time. Opponents wanted the video banned for its violent content, but their efforts failed. And good thing. This is an excellent, thought-provoking video, and a wonderful example of visual storytelling. Few videos these days make you want to watch to the end, but “Man Down” is an exception. And as for the violence, well, some would call it justice.
“S & M”
This one is lighter on the violence, and more light-hearted in general. It’s still a little shocking for the mainstream, but it’s hard not to smile when you hear Rihanna sing, “chains and whips excite me.” Also, give the girl props for some bonafide weirdness in this vid. It’s another win for Rihanna in the form of an attention-grabbing video.
“Rockstar 101”
One of the coolest things about Rihanna is her penchant for collaboration. On this track, she called in a truly heavy hitter - guitar legend, Slash. This track’s slow, dark beat is almost as ominous as its lyrical content is frivolous, making for a very intriguing combination in true Rihanna style.
“Rehab”
Speaking of collaborations, how about a tune with back-to-back Rosebud Magazine cover stars? That’s right, our last issue featured an exclusive interview with Justin Timberlake, who co-wrote this song for Rihanna and appears in the video. This was a single from 2007's Good Girl Gone Bad, which signaled a changing image for Rihanna, but only hinted at how far she would eventually push the envelope.
“If It’s Lovin’ That You Want”
This is old school Rihanna. Meaning 2005. Okay, it’s not that long ago, but it seems like forever in the life of a pop star. This was before all the controversy, when Rihanna was banging out simple boy-girl love songs and making videos the old fashioned way - with not much more than hot girls in skimpy clothes shaking their moneymakers.
That does it for our video round-up, but don’t forget to check out our exclusive interview with Rihanna in the current issue of Rosebud Magazine, which also features the sexy star on the cover. On newsstands and in bookstores August 30.
