Three Hot Video Games for Grower Down Time

Kirk and Spock keep hanging together even after all these years. Kirk and Spock keep hanging together even after all these years.

In every issue of Rosebud Magazine, we bring you a selection of the hottest video games on shelves. Check out these games, and max out this summer. Escape the heat with some killer vids.

Developer: Digital Extremes (The Darkness II)

Publisher: Namco Bandai/Paramount Digital Entertainment

Systems: XBox 360, Playstation 3, PC

Why We Want It NOW! Because it lets you, as Captain Kirk or his BFF Spock, go gunning for some alien scum. Playable both solo or with a friend, this third-person sci-fi shooter lets you play as either Starfleet officer, each with his own unique skills, such as Spock’s Vulcan nerve pinch. Plus, for hardcore Trekkers, the game features the voices of Star Trek reboot actors Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto and is set between the previous J.J. Abrams blockbuster and the latest, Star Trek Into Darkness.

Developer: Trion Worlds (Rift)

Publisher: Trion Worlds

Systems: XBox 360, Playstation 3, PC

Why We Want It NOW! Because this third-person sci-fi shooter lets us run around on the same future earth as the SyFy show it’s named for. Set in San Francisco — which was ravaged by a war with aliens but now has humans and aliens living together in an uneasy peace — the game takes a cue from World of Warcraft and lets you go it alone or play alongside thousands of fellow fans. There are also numerous missions and places to explore, as well as emergencies and other events inspired by the show.

Developer: Access Games (LORD OF APOCALYPSE)

Publisher: Rising Star Games

Systems: Playstation 3

Why We Want It NOW! Because this creepy game is like a Grand Theft Auto/Silent Hill mash-up directed by David Lynch. Set in an open town that recalls Twin Peaks, Washington, this has you, as FBI Special Agent York, investigating a ritualistic murder. But while this version is just as disturbing as the 2010 original, it’s actually a lot more fun, thanks to such additions as more intuitive controls, upgraded HD graphics and an expanded story.

As if the new game and movie weren’t enough Star Trek for you, Diamond Select is also releasing some cool new Trek toys. Minimates action figures of Kirk, Sisco and other favorite characters ($9.99 for packs of two; diamondselecttoys.com) can cruise around in the TOS Enterprise Mini Vehicle ($29.99), while the Enterprise Project Cutaway Ship ($174.99) reveals the inner workings of NCC-1701. But even cooler are the 7-inch Spock and Kirk figures ($21.99 and $24.99, respectively), which come with stands so you can pose the former hangin’ with the Horta and the latter throwing down with KHAAAAAAAAN!
