Zip-lining through the Costa Rican Rainforest makes a truly unique vacation. Zip-lining through the Costa Rican Rainforest makes a truly unique vacation.

2011 is almost upon us; so if you haven’t started your vacation planning, now is the time. Not sure where to go? If you’re tired of all the typical vacation destinations and haven’t seen anyplace truly inspiring, check out this list of unique vacation ideas for 2011.

Holi Festival – India

To witness sights and sounds unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before, plan a visit to northern India during their Holi Festival. In 2011, this exciting and legendary event will be celebrated on March 20th. Holi, “the festival of colors,” is one of the oldest festivals of India and is celebrated with intense joy. You’ll see vibrant, colorful costumes; hear jubilant Indian music; and watch people of all classes and creeds come together to welcome the spring.

Holi starts at midnight with a bonfire, and reaches its zenith in the morning when colors and music fill the air. Join in the celebration by painting your face and dancing in the street. Enjoy authentic Indian delicacies and drinks (take it easy on the opium!) while observing one of the most joyful festivals in the world. A stay at the Jai Mahal Palace will add luxury and comfort to your Indian vacation.

The Rainforest – Costa Rica

For a vacation that will leave you breathless, head to Costa Rica and sign up for a zip-line ride through the rainforest. You’ll see amazing scenery and animal life, including playful monkeys and exotic birds. Many of the canopy tours take you through the heart of the rainforest, across the Arenal River, and offer additional sight-seeing adventures. Try the Sky Tram for the best view of the Arenal Volcano and Lake, or visit the Butterfly Garden and Nature Reserve to see some beautiful wildlife.

Costa Rica has some truly unique experiences in addition to the rainforest. Scuba diving gives you the chance to see gorgeous coral, tropical fish, sharks, and other exciting marine life. White-water rafting is a thrill of a lifetime you must try at least once. A number of tours are offered here, with trained guides to show you how it’s done. You can also go kayaking, rappelling, horseback riding, biking, and hiking. The scenery in Costa Rica is spectacular, with beautiful beaches and cascading waterfalls. Don’t miss a nice soak in the natural hot springs at the Arenal Volcano. We recommend trying it at night so you can watch lava burst into the night sky.

Animal Safari – South Africa

Animal lovers - this is the vacation for you. With the biggest wildlife reserves in the world, Africa features thousands of animals in stunning settings. Kruger National Park, one of South Africa’s leading safari destinations, offers a variety of tours so you can customize your ideal safari vacation. Most of the excursions feature members of the “Big Five” of Africa: lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. Kruger is also home to more than 150 other mammals including giraffe, hippo, zebra, antelope and baboon. Observing these animals in their natural habitats is incredibly intense. (And the photo ops are unbelievable!)

South Africa also features many beautiful beaches with a variety of fun water sports and animal encounters. Swim with penguins and dolphins, dive with sharks - even Great Whites. You’ll see spectacular sights in South Africa that you simply won’t find anywhere else.

These unique vacation ideas for 2011 are just the beginning. Our planet features countless fantastic destinations just waiting for you to explore. Think about what would make your vacation ideal. Are you looking for sun and sand? Thrilling adventures? Do a little research and you’re certain to find the perfect spot. So drag out your passport, dust off your suitcases, and start planning your ideal vacation.
