Johnny Depp has reduced his carbon footprint by making his island home in the Bahamas solar powered.

It’s tough to know, when someone commits to eco-living, if they are rolling with the in-vogue punches or truly taking a stand for healthy living and planetary wellness. Although environmentalism is a worthy trend to follow, it’s still fun to dissect which hipsters do it for the right reasons. Arguably, one of the coolest dudes on the planet for over two decades is the uber-happening Johnny Depp, who appears to be taking some steps in the eco-friendly direction.

It’s fair to say that Johnny Depp has chosen to act in more than a few movies that run the risk of baffling the mainstream. Films like Edward Scissorhands and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas depict eccentric characters that are not so easily embraced by the masses. Depp shows a drive that transcends what may or may not be likable to the world. Just turns out that he is, indeed, likable.

So let’s accept that Johnny Depp is the real deal. What has he done in the name of eco-living? Isn’t he a filthy rich celebrity who will leave a massive carbon footprint on the earth in spite of himself? Well, maybe. He does have at least three homes that we know of, vastly far apart from one another. Travel alone is not so eco-savvy, but, let’s forgive him this and take a look at his environmentally sound hideout in the Bahamas.

Six years ago, Depp in his endless pursuit to dodge the Hollywood glitz, bought a 35-acre island in the Bahamas that he officially named, “Little Hall’s Pond Cay.” He nicknamed his private paradise “F*ck Off Island,” which makes clear the purpose of such a retreat. Depp employed the trail-blazing environmental leadership of Mike Strizki and created an earth-friendly oasis fuelled by solar hydrogen technology.

Strizki’s system essentially works by converting sunlight to electricity, which is then used to meet the energy needs of the home. As a result, Johnny Depp’s luxurious island is more of an eco-friendly, self-sustaining, ethical paradise than it is an example of celebrity excess. Although, it apparently cost Depp upwards of $500,000 to convert his abode to solar power, we can certainly appreciate that this is one pirate who spent wisely on his island. Sure, it’s money most of us can’t throw around, but aren’t we happy to see someone famous do something useful with their exorbitant paycheques? It’s refreshing when someone in pop-culture who is actually cool and worthy of an influence reminds us admirers to do our part in going green.
