Mixed Martial Arts is one of the world’s fastest growing sports. Fans and practitioners are on the rise, and the UFC is big business. Despite the UFC’s perfect track record of safety and the sport’s overall record of safety, which is comparable to other major sports like football and hockey, many detractors continue to complain that MMA doesn’t belong in our culture. All too often these arguments are fueled by abject ignorance or the nuance, skill, and safety of MMA.

Last weekend Anderson Silva went a long way to proving beyond a doubt that he is the best pound-for-pound fighter in MMA by knocking out Vitor Belfort with a unique left front kick, the likes of which has never been seen in the UFC. I’ve advocated Georges St. Pierre as the best pound-for-pound guy in this space before, but even I’m about ready to sit on the fence after UFC 126 and that spectacular finish. However, things are shaping up to put an end to the ongoing dispute once and for all.

Mac Danzig stepped into the caged octagon at UFC 124 in front of 23,000 fans in Montreal’s Bell Centre on Saturday and delivered one of the greatest MMA performances of his career. Danzig was the underdog against fellow Ultimate Fighter tournament winner Joe Stevenson, but delivered an incredible knockout less than two minutes into round one of the lightweight match. It’s quite a month for Danzig, who also has a gallery of his photography featured in the December issue of Rosebud Magazine.

BJ Penn and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson both made successful outings at UFC 123 on Saturday. Jackson defeated Lyoto Machida via split decision, while Penn knocked out his old rival Matt Hughes 21 seconds into round one. Each fighter was coming off a loss – Jackson to Rashad Evans, Penn to Frankie Edgar – that set him back significantly. And each fighter seemed noticeably relieved by his win. Now the question is, what’s next?

Cain Velasquez’s first round TKO of UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar was impressive on it’s own, but the Mexican fighter’s performance at UFC 121 taught MMA fans a few things.

First of all, Velasquez showed incredible wrestling. As an NCAA Division 1 wrestler, Velasquez’s skills were assumed to be above average in the MMA world. But most of his fights have been out-and-out stand up battles that ended quickly and badly for his opponents. So his wrestling was something of an unknown quantity.

Nick Diaz avenged his last loss by winning a unanimous decision victory over KJ Noons at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons II from San Jose, California. It’s now been three years since Diaz has lost, but more impressive than that is how he’s done what he’s done. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has out-struck former pro-boxer Noons, Lithuanian knockout artist Marius Zaromskis, and Japanese stand-up legend Hayato Sakurai.

Anderson Silva extended his winning streak to 13 straight victories at UFC 117 on Saturday night, but just barely. After being controlled for four rounds and most of the fifth by Chael Sonnen, the world middleweight champion pulled off a submission win via triangle choke to snatch a win out of the fire and retain his title.

The second UFC on Versus event took place Sunday, featuring some fast rising fighters in the world of mixed martial arts. Light heavyweight phenom Jon “Bones” Jones made an impressive statement by polishing off grizzled veteran and fellow wrestling standout Vladimir Matyushenko. Meanwhile, Yushin Okami’s winning performance against Mark Munoz puts him in the middleweight title picture.

It was one of the least anticipated UFC cards in recent memory, and UFC 119 lived up to its lack of billing. The night was markedly short on decisive outcomes. In some cases, hard fought seesaw battles provided entertainment, as in the case of Joey Beltran vs. Matt Mitrione, and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Ryan Bader. But in the featured match of the night, Frank Mir vs. Mirko CroCop Filipovic, the two fighters refused to take sufficient risk to establish a compelling pace.

Brock Lesnar versus Shane Carwin was billed as the biggest heavyweight MMA match in the history of the sport. At UFC 116 from Las Vegas, the short but sweet fight lived up to its billing with a stunning start and equally shocking finish as Lesnar went on to retain the world heavyweight title.

The world’s #1 ranked heavyweight MMA fighter may not come out on top of that poll the next time it’s published. Fedor Emelianenko suffered what is considered his first legitimate loss on Saturday when he tapped out to Fabricio Werdum’s triangle armbar submission at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum.

Strikeforce prepares for another event as they pursue a share of the MMA market in a UFC mad North America. Despite having some of the sport’s top talent, Strikeforce as so far failed to steal much attention from most UFC fans. Renato “Babalu” Sobral, Robbie Lawler, and Marius Zaromskis are all entertaining fighters, though. So let’s have a look at how they will do in Wednesday’s event.

UFC 114 was one of the most-hyped MMA fights of the year, and in the end, Rashad Evans used his superior quickness to dominate Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Michael Bisping also found his way back to the win column by picking apart Dan Miller. Meanwhile fellow Ultimate Fighter alum Diego Sanchez suffered an upset at the hands of Bisping’s English countryman, John Hathaway.
