Mining Company Plans to Destroy Precious Rainforest, Killing of Tigers & Orangutans

Orangutans are just one of the rare creatures destined to suffer if the rainforest in Aceh, Indonesia gets rezoned. Orangutans are just one of the rare creatures destined to suffer if the rainforest in Aceh, Indonesia gets rezoned.

A Canadian mining company is behind a plan to destroy or seriously damage a huge stretch of protected rainforest, one of the last places on earth where orangutans, tigers, rhinos, and elephants live together.

Toronto's East India Minerals Corporation have decided that human greed and turning a profit for shareholders is more important than the existence of irreplaceable nature, including some of the most endangered big mammals on earth.

Some big media outlets, like The Guardian, have picked up this story. But of course, as usual, the major mainstream media, slaves to commerce and the financial interests of the corporate world, are not reporting on this travesty.

The forces of evil are pillaging the natural world, but they can only do so with your consent.

The Toronto mining company is planning on having huge swaths of the forest in Aceh, Sumatra (located in Indonesia) rezoned so that the company can mine and destroy what has been protected land.

The forest is not only ecologically unique, it is home to highly endangered species of rhino and tigers, among other animals. Orangutans are also bound to see their already dwindling numbers decline should this move come to pass, as will the Sumatran elephant.

So what’s going on in the world? Are we so concerned with the Kardashians and American Idol that we will let a pristine stretch of wilderness and all its inhabitants disappear forever?

If you’re interested in helping out, try signing the petition at change.org, which you can access here: http://www.change.org/saveaceh.

I don’t know how effective internet petition campaigns like that one are, but it only takes five seconds to sign it. And personally, if I get to the pearly gates and find out that my action would have helped but I didn’t act, that’s much worse than finding out that I thought I was helping, but was ineffective. Neither is great, but one is worse.

The other thing you can do about this is to recognize that East India Mining Corporation mines for gold and silver (among other elements). So where do the precious metals in your jewelry come from?

Next time you’re buying some bling – a ring or a pair of earrings or whatever it is – consider what’s more important, your vanity or the earth? Buy secondhand, or not at all.

Okay, that’s enough of a rant. I’m here to inform you, not lecture you. But if you care about the destruction of tigers, orangutans, elephants, rhinos, and countless other species along with incredibly beautiful and irreplaceable forest, then please share this story with your friends and loved ones.

Get involved. The forces of evil are pillaging the natural world, but they can only do so with your consent.
