Anderson Silva used submission, not striking, to defend his title at UFC 117.Anderson Silva extended his winning streak to 13 straight victories at UFC 117 on Saturday night, but just barely. After being controlled for four rounds and most of the fifth by Chael Sonnen, the world middleweight champion pulled off a submission win via triangle choke to snatch a win out of the fire and retain his title.

There was an incredible amount of hype leading up to the championship match on Saturday, and the contest lived up to it for the most part. Sonnen used his superior wrestling to keep the fight on the ground for much of the battle. Sonnen also, unbelievably, managed to get the better of the champ for at least half of the time they were on their feet as well, rocking Silva with big left hands.

Jon Jones rocketed into the upper echelon of MMA with a win over Vladimir MatyushenkoThe second UFC on Versus event took place Sunday, featuring some fast rising fighters in the world of mixed martial arts. Light heavyweight phenom Jon “Bones” Jones made an impressive statement by polishing off grizzled veteran and fellow wrestling standout Vladimir Matyushenko. Meanwhile, Yushin Okami’s winning performance against Mark Munoz puts him in the middleweight title picture.

Jones came out looking very tall and lean against the stockier Matyushenko. After a few brief exchanges on their feet, Matyushenko charged in for a take down, which Jones reversed.

Werdum Hands Fedor Emelianenko First Loss
Written by Happy Kreter    Tuesday, 29 June 2010 00:10    PDF Print E-mail

Fedor Emelianenko tapped out to Fabricio WerdumThe world’s #1 ranked heavyweight MMA fighter may not come out on top of that poll the next time it’s published. Fedor Emelianenko suffered what is considered his first legitimate loss on Saturday when he tapped out to Fabricio Werdum’s triangle armbar submission at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum.

Fedor’s critics have long suggested that the Russian fighter, once the heavyweight division’s most dominant combatant, has become overrated due to his unwillingness to take on top ranked fighters. Indeed, even Werdum was cut by the UFC due to his poor win-loss record with that organization.

Maybe the critics were right.
