Victoria’s Angels and the ‘Secret’ to a Successful Company

Men and women alike rejoice in seeing the Victoria’s Secret catalog land in our hot little hands each season. Men enjoy those glossy pages for obvious reasons — they are full of some of the most beautiful women on the planet. But Victoria’s Secret and its Angels represent a fantasy to all of us — especially entrepreneurs who marvel at the brand’s massive success.

To bachelors, the Angels (like über-hotties Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio and Orlando Bloom’s babe, Miranda Kerr) represent the ultimate fantasy woman: tall, curvaceous, flawless and wearing nothing but sexy lingerie all day.

The Victoria’s Secret Angels are models who act as ambassadors for the brand, and many have become household names in their own right, without ever branching out into film or television.

To a happily committed guy whose eyes are only for one woman, the thought of his gal in Victoria’s Secret’s unmentionables is a fantasy of its own. Millions have happily picked up that phone or mouse to order something fun, and plenty of bolder men have ventured through the local mall into the VS retail store, then proudly walked to their car brandishing that telltale pink shopping bag with pride. Everyone knows he is going to have a good night.

The Victoria’s Secret supermodel spokeswomen, also known as Angels, have been a force to be reckoned with in the fashion industry since 1997, when the original Angels (including Tyra Banks, Stephanie Seymour and Helena Christensen) were introduced to the world. Since then, their ranks have included some of the most ridiculously beautiful women to grace a runway. But they haven’t stopped on the catwalk: Some Angels, not content to work only in panties and wings, have broken out into the entertainment industry. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley replaced Megan Fox to star alongside Shia LaBeouf in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the latest installment in the massively popular series. Gisele Bündchen has become a media fixture as the well-known (if perhaps not very well-liked) wife of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. And both Banks and Heidi Klum have become media moguls, with TV shows and fashion lines under their designer belts.

The Victoria’s Secret brand has been successful as well. Among intimate-apparel retailers, VS is the leader of the pack. The company was recently ranked as the 20th-most-valuable brand in the U.S.*, easily eclipsing competitors like Frederick’s of Hollywood, whose entire operating budget is less than what VS spends in advertising each year. The VS brand also possesses some of the highest worldwide recognition, even in countries without any brick-and-mortar stores, thanks to their online sales and a ubiquitous media presence.

Big-box stores like Target and Walmart, as well as discount retailers like Ross and Marshalls, have been making strides to capture some of the sales from shoppers looking for a less expensive alternative to Victoria’s Secret, and on the flip side there are pricey vendors like Agent Provocateur that are catering to the wealthier section of the population, but VS still has the lion’s share of the lingerie market. The company’s sales of body products, pajamas, clothing and fragrance has also served it well throughout the years; many women wear VS scents exclusively. Victoria clearly knows the secret to retail success.

Part of Victoria’s secret has involved marketing to a segment of the population that has been relatively recession-proof: high-school and college-aged girls, who have gobbled up the company’s Pink line. The company’s other successful strategy has been to involve itself in the entertainment industry by hosting red-carpet events, such as the star-studded annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which has featured celebrity guests and performances from pop superstars like the Black Eyed Peas and Katy Perry. VS is also known for its many high-budget advertising campaigns, which saturate our televisions, magazines, websites and even sporting events.

They are also well known for having fuller figures than traditional runway models. Former Angel Tyra Banks and other curvaceous models have paved the way for women like Kim Kardashian, Béyonce Knowles and Christina Hendricks to be the ideal bootylicious body type of today.

Victoria’s Secret has found a special place in the hearts and minds of people around the world and has been able to weather the recent economic storm in a ship of satin and lace. We all need fantasy in our lives, especially when things in reality aren’t so fantastic. Women will always want to feel sexy and wanted, and men will always crave the affection of a beautiful woman. So if we gals can look a little more like Adriana or Miranda in a corset and thigh-high stockings, that’s a win for men and women alike. And just like its products will always be in demand, Victoria’s Secret and its Angels will always be here for us, in our malls, in our mailboxes, on our computer and television screens, and of course, in our bedrooms.
