American Idol Season 10: Jennifer Lopez Out. Who's In?

Jennifer Lopez will not be a judge on American Idol Jennifer Lopez will not be a judge on American Idol

The upheaval of judges on the Fox reality tv hit American Idol is not settled yet. The recent departures of original judges Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, as well as the departure of newer additions to the show Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi, has left some vacant positions on the show. Jennifer Lopez had been in talks with Fox, but the network now appears to be heading in another direction.

It’s not clear yet whether American Idol will return to its original format of a three-judge panel, or maintain the four-judge system it introduced for Season 8 with the addition of DioGuardi. Either way, figuring out who will join Jackson on one of America’s most popular programs is going to make for fun gossip among viewers.

J-Lo would have been a great fit. She is an accomplished performer and has an attractive on-screen persona. However, her diva-like demands behind the scenes, whether on movie sets or during her concert tours, are the stuff of legend. Fox apparently had enough of her out-of-hand expectations, and are pursuing a new direction.

Too bad for Lopez, whose career could use a boost after disappointing receptions for both her most recent album, 2007’s Rebirth, and her last film, this spring’s The Back-Up Plan.

But it may yet be a positive turn of events for the likes of Sir Elton John and Harry Connick Jr., both of whom are reported to be front-runners for a permanent judge’s spot on America’s favorite karaoke contest.

Elton John is one of the Top 15 best-selling musical artists of all time, having sold in excess of 250 million albums over a career spanning better than four decades. But he’s more than just a singer and performer, he has also written some of the most enduring pop hits of the 20th and 21st centuries. Those tunes include the likes of “Rocket Man,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” and “Bennie and the Jets.”

Harry Connick Jr. isn’t quite the legend that Sir Elton is, but he’s not exactly chopped liver. He’s sold 16 million albums and has had more #1 albums on the U.S. Jazz Charts than any other artist in history. For the past couple of decades, Connick has split his time between acting in movies and recording new albums.

It’s unlikely that American Idol Season 10 will feature an all-male panel of judges. Randy Jackson is confirmed to return, while the most prominent names in the rumor mill are Elton John and Harry Connick Jr. Who will represent the fairer sex on Fox’s hit show remains to be seen, but it won’t be Jennifer Lopez. As for the judge who will take on Simon Cowell’s previous role as callous putdown artist, that is also unknown, but so far none of the rumored candidates seem cruel enough to pull of that task.

Update: TMZ is reporting today (Sept. 14) that J. Lo is back in and has agreed to a one-year deal to host Season 10 of American Idol.
