The 11th Annual Burnaby Blues & Roots Festival

Rosebud Magazine recently had the opportunity to attend the 11th Annual Burnaby Blues & Roots Festival headlined by Taj Mahal and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

August 14th, was one of the hottest days of the summer and a perfect day for an outdoor concert. While concert goers tried to find bits of shade and a spot under the misting tent, the sweet sounds of the blues filled the air.

Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real were an amazing surprise. I'd never heard of them, but can guarantee it won't be the last time I hear them play. The only disappointment here was that their CD wasn't available for sale at the festival. Following in his father, Willie Nelson's, footsteps this 21 year old has a long career ahead of him with his classic American sound.

Canadian artist and Juno winner, Serena Ryder has been compared to a teenage Aretha Franklin. She can belt out  some strong vocals and knows her way around a guitar. She gave a fantastic performance.

Colin Linden, with his trademark big black hat had the crowd clapping along to his classic roots music.

Guitar Whiz, Kenny Wayne Shepherd blew the crowd away with his incredible skills. This was who this crowd was here to see and hear. Lead singer Noah Hunt did an amazing job as always.

To end the night the legendary Taj Mahal  got the crowd up on their feet dancing and swaying to the music, to the sounds of Wont' you do me good baby? and Slow Drag. This blues veteran brought a smile to everyone's face and will have me coming back for next year's festival.

Other performers included Little Miss Higgins, Yukon Blonde, and Zaac Pick.
