Hot Stuff: Our Guide To Fine Recent and Upcoming Entertainment

David Bowie keeps it weird with his new album cover. David Bowie keeps it weird with his new album cover.

Check out these albums, movies, TV shows, and other cool stuff we're into right now. These are great ways to pass the time when you're not tending to your plants, or in some cases, while you're tending to your beloved grow.

David Bowie: The Next Day

After a decade-long lay off, one of the most influential musicians of the last century is back with his 24th studio album. The word “legend” gets thrown around pretty liberally sometimes, but if ever the term was apt, it’s when applied to David Bowie. Bowie has aged gracefully. How many other artists his age, with their heyday well in the rearview, can release an album that the world actually expects to be worthwhile? Few indeed. But Bowie’s the real deal, and so is this album.

Veep: Season 1 DVD & BLU-RAY (March 26)

Ever since Seinfeld went off the air, the cast of the iconic sitcom have struggled to find themselves another hit. Well, Julia Louis-Dreyfus may have finally done it with Veep, the HBO comedy series adapted from British television. The actress best known as Elaine Benes plays a fictional American vice president , with child-actor-turned-hottie Anna Chlumsky (My Girl) and the hilarious Tony Hale (Arrested Development) rounding out the cast. The Emmy-nominated first season of this political comedy makes a fine addition to any TV junkie’s DVD collection.

Game of Thrones: Season 3 (March 31)

The season premiere of Game of Thrones is easily the most anticipated television event so far this year. And for good reason. The Seven Kingdoms of Westeros are in upheaval with Joffrey wreaking havoc in King’s Landing, as things go from bad to worse at Winterfell. That might sound like a lot of nerd-talk to the uninitiated, but the bottom line is that if you’re not up to speed on Game Of Thrones, you’re not only missing out on possibly the greatest show on TV, you’re absent from a bonafide cultural event.

Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One — Avengers Assembled 10-Disc Limited Edition Six-Movie Collector’s Set (April 2)

This box set is a fanboy’s wet dream. You get the smash 2012 film The Avengers plus the five other superhero films that led up to the cinematic juggernaut: Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 1 & 2. In addition to the six movies, you get more bonus features than Hulk could shake a green fist at, including making-of featurettes, deleted scenes, memorabilia and a look at the upcoming Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. If you like muscle-bound dudes in shiny outfits smashing nefarious villains, this is a must-have. Excelsior!

Evil Dead (April 12)

OK, this is a classic movie that arguably does not need a remake, but the trailer for Evil Dead is so off-the-charts bonkers and flat-out disgusting that horror fanatics have found themselves in eager anticipation for what otherwise might have been just another superfluous Hollywood reboot. The plot is simple and familiar: A bunch of hot teenagers end up in the middle of nowhere and unwittingly unleash a heaping serving of malicious evil. One look at the girl cutting her own tongue in half and you’ll have received fair warning: This one is not for the faint of heart!
