Lady Gaga Quitting Facebook for Charity

Lady Gaga sacrifices her digital life on Facebook and Twitter for charity Lady Gaga sacrifices her digital life on Facebook and Twitter for charity

It’s death to Lady Gaga December 1, 2010. Digital death, that is. Lady Gaga is only one of the celebrities closing down their Facebook and Twitter accounts in efforts to raise money for Alicia Keys’ Keep a Child Alive charity. Usher, Justin Timberlake, Kim Kardashian, Ryan Seacrest, Elijah Wood and others are sacrificing their digital lives to help save real lives. How is quitting Facebook for charity going to save lives?

Singer Alicia Keys campaigned for her charity by gaining the support of numerous celebrities who agreed to swear off social media until 1 million dollars was raised. Keep A Child Alive, founded by Leigh Blake and Alicia Keys, gives treatment and financial support to families affected by HIV/Aids in Africa and India. It not only provides medication but also nutrition, shelter, education and love for those affected by this widespread disease.

Why did Alicia Keys choose this method of raising money? “This is a new and novel approach to raising money for charity,” Alicia Keys said, “It is really important and super cool to use mediums that we naturally are on. It’s so important to shock people to the point of waking them up.” She added, “This is such a direct and instantly emotional way and a little sarcastic, you know, of a way to get people to pay attention.”

With nearly 24 million fans on Facebook and 7 million followers on Twitter, Lady Gaga’s digital death has garnered a lot of attention. She joins Serena Williams, Janelle Monae, Jay Sean, Jennifer Hudson, and a number of other stars who have pledged to stay “digitally dead” until enough money has been raised. They will then reactivate their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

How will the money be raised? Whenever fans see a “BUY LIFE” bar code, they can scan it using StickyBits or WiMO (apps you can download to your Smartphone) and instantly “buy” a life. Anyone can be involved – you can even purchase a scannable “BUY LIFE” t-shirt and invite others to participate. Proceeds not only bring your favorite celebrities back to life (digitally speaking), but give essential aid to victims in need. You can also text your donation – visit buylife.org for details.

Watch Usher’s Final “Tweet & Testament”

By quitting Facebook and Twitter, celebrities like Lady Gaga take a bit of a risk in losing fans and followers. But they have the bigger picture in mind, and have faith their fans will realize the significance of their “Digital Life Sacrifice” and give support. Leigh Blake, president of Keep A Child Alive, stated “We’re trying to sort of make the remark: ‘Why do we care so much about the death of one celebrity as opposed to millions and millions of people dying in the place that we’re all from?’” Good point. Will fans agree?

Only time will tell. In the meantime, fans can watch their favorite celebrity’s “last tweet and testament” videos to hear their final goodbyes. Photos of them lying in coffins can also be viewed at keepachildalive.org – a bit of a visual shock to represent the seriousness of the cause. Alicia Keys hopes that by quitting Facebook and Twitter, her fans (and the millions of other celebrity fans) will be motivated to get involved. “As a human being,’ she says simply, “You deserve to have a chance at life.”
