Shipwreck Beach makes Zante, Greece a truly unique vacation destination. Shipwreck Beach makes Zante, Greece a truly unique vacation destination.

Whether you are an extensive traveler or have never left your home state, you want to choose a vacation spot that meets your high expectations. You also want a place that’s different and special - perhaps somewhere out of the ordinary.

Our first list of unique vacation ideas for 2011 included Costa Rica, India, and South Africa. Here are two more exciting destinations to add to the list.

Dublin, Ireland

Many consider Dublin to be the heart and soul of Ireland. You’ve got culture, castles, and plenty of pubs. If you can swing it, plan to be in Dublin on March 17th for the St. Patrick’s Day parade. You’ll see some of Europe’s best street performers and other fun entertainment.

Dublin Castle is one of the most famous historic buildings in the city and should be included on your must-see list. The impressive architecture and historical beauty throughout the entire castle makes it a sight worth seeing. And no visit to Dublin is complete without a stop at the Guinness Storehouse - Ireland’s number one visitor attraction. Learn all about “the world’s greatest beer” (according to all Dubliners), and try some yourself at Gravity Bar - the highest bar in Dublin with gorgeous panoramic views.

Dublin’s nightlife is legendary. Try the “Backpacker Pubcrawl” – your chance to experience the best pubs, clubs, and lounges of Dublin. Get all the local tips and hints for what to see and where to visit, plus free shots and drink specials. You’ll love the music and lively atmosphere, and are sure to make new friends. Each night brings something different, so you may want to take the tour more than once!

Zante Island, Greece

Zakynthos, or Zante, is an enchanting island rich with natural beauty and friendly locals. In 1837, Edgar Allen Poe wrote a poem entitled “Sonnet to Zante,” in which the last line states “Isola d’ora! Flor di Levante!” which means “Island of Gold, Flower of the East.” Visitors agree with Poe and are equally charmed by Zante.

Spectacular scenery, unique endangered wildlife, impressive museums, and interesting attractions make this a special vacation destination. Zante’s beaches are the most popular of all the Greek Islands. Shipwreck Beach is one of the most photographed places in the world and is the trademark of the island. The sand completely surrounds the shipwreck, making it a stunning sight to see. Zante is also famous for the endangered sea turtle Caretta-Caretta which lay their eggs on the soft, golden beaches. Catching a sight of these creatures is a rare treat.

Families enjoy a number of water sports on the island, with windsurfing as one of the most popular. In Zante, the sand is cool and the sun is hot. If you’re looking for a unique beach vacation, check out the “Flower of the East.”

Wherever you choose to take your vacation this new year, make sure you spend it with your family or someone special. The best memories are made when we are surrounded with love and laughter. These unique vacation ideas for 2011 are only the destination. The vacation is what you make of it.
