Five Video Games Your Girlfriend Will Play With You

Get in some quality time with your girl – play video games! Get in some quality time with your girl – play video games!

Millions of females worldwide play video games, but perhaps you've found yourself dating someone who would rather shop or sunbathe than annihilate terrorists in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Do not despair! Many video games today are adding features or storylines to make themselves more attractive to female gamers, and a lot of those games are perfect for some one-on-one time. Forget traditionally female-centered titles like The Sims, here are five games that you and your girlfriend will really enjoy playing together.

1.) Resident Evil 5 - Xbox 360, PS3 (Capcom)

Resident EvilResident Evil

Take the best aspects of a horror movie and combine those with fun, cooperative gameplay, and you have Resident Evil 5, the most recent installment in Capcom's massively-popular series. The games have spawned four (soon to be five) feature films, and it’s easy to see why - these games throw the player into a realistic cinematic Hellscape - a plague-infected Africa complete with zombies. That experience is bound to bring any couple closer together.

RE5 has a completely cooperative campaign and a variety of cooperative missions, for hours of romantic zombie-killing enjoyment. Like many new games, it has a very formidable playable female character that is used for the entire campaign.

Though this series is known for a relatively stiff learning curve, any newcomer can easily play a supportive role throughout the campaign, and will eventually pick up the skills needed to really kick some infected tail.

2.) Halo: Reach - Xbox 360 (Bungie)

There is a reason why the Halo franchise is so popular, and its newest installment, Halo: Reach is a perfect example of what makes this series such a smash. Simple controls, amazing weapons, a meaningful and interesting campaign, and industry-standard-setting multiplayer have solidified Halo: Reach as one of the best games ever for getting together with friends.

In addition to the new weapons and maps, developers at Bungie have added a playable female Spartan character who can even be outfitted in pink armor for multiplayer. And the immense satisfaction achieved by single-handedly annihilating a team of trash-talking guys, then having them realize it was a GIRL who took them out is priceless.

3.) Rock Band (any) - Multi platform (Harmonix/MTV/EA)

Music games have grown to be a huge sector of the video game industry, and for good reason - they are really fun! With the ability to rock out on the guitar, bass, drums, or vocals to a variety of amazing vintage and modern tunes, the Rock Band franchise is a great way to unleash your inner Freddy Mercury or Gwen Stefani.

There are six iterations of the game so far - Rock Bands 1, 2 and 3 and a Lego version geared toward kids, as well as Green Day and Beatles editions. There are also over a thousand downloadable tracks, which encompass nearly all genres of music from rock to pop to country, with some great options for girls. With this many track choices, Rock Band is the perfect choice for an afternoon of his-and-hers headbanging.

4.) Mario Kart Wii - Wii (Nintendo)

No list of multiplayer games is complete without Mario Kart. Even many non-gamers have played a version of Nintendo's iconic racing franchise, and a lot of women will find that playing the newest console game in the series makes them nostalgic the same way it does for many guys. The Wii version makes great use of the system's motion controller, and is one of the games that made the Wii so massively popular. Of course, all of Nintendo's most beloved characters are available, adding to the nostalgia factor.

The addition of an optional wheel attachment for the "Wii-mote" makes the fantasy racing just a bit more realistic, and a variety of race and battle modes mean that there are ample options for couples to work out any argument by shooting shells at each other.

5.) Gears of War 3 - Xbox 360 (Epic Games)

GearsOfWarGearsOfWar

This month's hottest release is also likely to be a fun game for the ladies, for many of the same reasons as Halo: Reach, though the game is quite different. Gears of War 3 is a third-person shooter, offering a different type of gameplay than Halo's first-person perspective. Epic has also added a leveling system to the game, where players will gain extra abilities and perks as they gain experience. And, let's face it, this is THE game of the Fall, so you know you want to play it.

Luckily, your girl may want to join you. Like Halo: Reach, Gears of War 3 has added a female COG to the main characters, and they also have three additional playable female characters, a treat for gals who don't feel particularly attached to the series' traditional beefy male characters. Also like Halo, Gears has a pretty intuitive control scheme, making it relatively easy for gaming virgins to hop right in and start blasting.

If you have a particularly "girly" girlfriend, she may need some gentle persuading (like committing to a Katherine Heigl film-fest) before she will pick up that controller, but knowing Epic Games' penchant for unique storytelling, amazing graphics, and creative enemies, she may just warm up to Gears of War 3. If not, try one of the other four games we just mentioned. If she can't find enjoyment in Mario Kart or Rock Band, then she may be a lost cause.
